Castletown is the former capital of the island, Castle Rushen being the stronghold of the Kings and Lords of Mann in olden times. The Isle of Man is a beautiful island, located in the Irish Sea between the islands of Great Britain. Not part of the United Kingdom, the island is actually a self-governing British Crown dependency and the current Lord of Mann is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Date: 30th July 2009. It's not just one town, but two, the "Lower town" and the "Upper town". From the first steps into the castle of the Medieval town of Monemvasia (it means "Sole Entrance") you 'll be left astonished by its beauty and you' ll start wondering which way to go. Here, the road to the left leads above of the entrance, to the house of one of the greatest Greek poets, Giannis (or Yannis) Ritsos, the poet of "Romiosini". The road in the middle is the "central" road of Monemvasia (Lakonia, Peloponnese, Greece), the one that leads to its "heart". Saying "central" I don't mean any avenue, it's a stone alley about 3 metres wide. The alley to the right leads deeper inside the "heart" of the "castletown" and finally to the sea. The medieval, byzantine "castletown" of Mystras, close to Sparta (or "Sparti") town, Lakonia, Peloponnese, Greece. Here you can see the church of the abandoned Perivleptos monastery. In its interior you can see some impressive frescoes. In 1261, the Latins ceded Mystras and other forts in the southeastern Peloponnese as ransom for Villehardouin, who had been captured in Pelagonia, and Michael VIII Palaeologus made the city the seat of the new Despotate of the Morea. It remained the capital of the despotate, ruled by relatives of the Byzantine emperor, although the Venetians still controlled the coast and the islands. Castle Rushen Number of views as of 13th February 2019 = 900. The mediaeval Castle Rushen, at Castletown on the Isle of Man. The Isle of Man was under Norse rule since the late 8th century AD, and construction of the castle is believed to have started around the reign of the last Norse kings of Mann in the 13th century. The castle guards the entrance to the Silverburn River, and would originally have consisted of a central square stone tower or keep. The castle was developed by successive kings of Mann between the 13th and 16th century, and towers to the east, west and south were added along with gatehouses and a curtain wall. Full moon over the medieval "castletown" of Monemvasia. Photo taken from the yard of the house, where one of the greatest Greek poets, Giannis Ritsos, was born and raised in. His house is right above the main entrance of the castle. Monemvasia is built on a big rock which is connected with the mainland of Peloponnisos with a narrow brigde. It is often called the "Greek Gibraltar". As it is built on the "back" side of the rock it's not visible from the mainland and offers a limitless view to the sea. It's not just one castle but two. The upper one is almost completely destroyed. Only a wonderful church and one or two buildings are "still on their feet".
