"Pure psychic automatism" was how André Breton defined surrealism, and while the definition has proved capable of significant expansion, automatism remains of prime importance in the movement. Many of these are said to free imagination by producing a creative process free of conscious control. The importance of the unconscious as a source of inspiration is central to the nature of surrealism. In automatic drawing, the hand is allowed to move 'randomly' across the paper. In applying chance and accident to mark-making, drawing is to a large extent freed of rational control. Under the Jetty' five colour reduction linocut was created from a reference photo I took at Port Noarlunga Jetty, South Australia. I enjoy being under a jetty, protected from the sun with the smells of wet wood, sounds of water lapping at its posts and beach, and seeing the shadows that are created in the water from the structure. This print was a lot of work with careful colour and cutting consideration.

This picture was taken at the Botanical Gardens of Montreal, Quebec Canada. I had found the patterns in the leaves to be so interesting. I hope you enjoy this photo as much as I did taking it.
