My take on the California skate culture in the 80's.

“If it feels good, do it!” was the moral imperative at Woodstock, but by the time Jimmy Carter came around, the nation was swept up in a counterrevolution based on “If it feels good, it must be risky and bad, immoral and dangerous to your health.” Both points have some validity, but sometimes you do just need to scratch that itch to see what happens and usually, it’s for the better.

On September 13 and 14, 1969, a selection of the finest folk singers and musicians in the world convened on the edge of Highway 1 in Big Sur, California for a rather intimate gathering of peace, love, music, and a farewell to summer. Set to a backdrop of some of America’s most glorious scenery, the sixth annual Big Sur Folk Festival continued to be an 'anti-festival festival,' considered by attendees as the antithesis of the more commercial events, though the artists considered it an antidote to them. The non-profit 1969 event maintained the tradition of staying small through minimal advertising. It's estimated that 5,000 paid to enter the festival each day, and another 2,000 or so listened freely by camping along the highway out front.

The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers is an underground comic about three stoner freaks (similar to, but distinct from, hippies) from San Francisco. The trio first appeared in The Rag, an underground newspaper published in Austin, Texas, beginning in May 1968, and were regularly reprinted in underground papers around the United States and in other parts of the world.

If you lived in Seattle in the late '60s, you probably remember the Emerald City's burgeoning counterculture scene that could be found in the U-District. Within this scene reminiscent of Northern California, numerous hippie run businesses sprang up, one of which was Morningtown Pizza and Subs. Tom Ninkovich, Warren Argo, and Bob Owen were friends who quit their jobs to make a worker-owned cooperative pizza parlor a reality, and Morningtown opened their doors on April Fools' Day 1969. Located in a converted garage at 4110 Roosevelt Way NE, the atmosphere was low-key with a folk music soundtrack, and a staff of hippies making some surprisingly food. The college crowd ate it up, as the U-District was lacking in food options in the '60s.

What does it say? What does it mean? What is it!? Nobody knows for sure, but it's super psychedelic and will probably blow your mind if you try to understand it...

In the mid-60s, young people flocked to San Francisco's Haight and Ashbury neighborhood, attracted by the area's cheap rent. In 1965, the first hippie boutique opened at 1510 Haight Street in the Doolan-Larson Building. The storefront here was owned by a 24-year-old young woman named Peggy Caserta who named her place Mnasidika, a reference to the first known lesbians in written history (see The Songs of Bilitis by Pierre Louÿs). Among her friends and customers were counterculture artists and musicians, most of whom would go on to be big names, but all bought their jeans, tees, and other fashion essentials from her little neighborhood storefront. Mnasidika closed after the Summer of Love in 1968, but the space as it was remains today.

Trashman is a fictional character, a superhero who appeared regularly in underground comix and magazines between 1968 and 1985. Trashman is a hero of the working classes and a champion of the radical left causes. The Trashman stories are set in a dystopian near-future America, which after having been ravaged by nuclear weapon attacks, has become a fascist police state, with "vast urban conglomerations. The Trashman series is one of the very few superhero stories depicted in underground comix of the '60s and '70s, particularly as a recurring character. Trashman's post-apocalyptic setting and Marxist-anarchist overtones expressed many social and political beliefs, as well as the feelings on the Vietnam War and counterculture of the era.

Subservience didn't end well for the Hierarchy is something that kind of speaks for itself, right? I mean, if you feel that way, of course.

Abbie Hoffman was the leader of the yippies and was a libertarian and anarchist in the psychedelic 70s. He was antigovernment and was full for the Flower Power ideals with his Youth International Party for socialism.
