The Cordyceps brain infection (abbreviated as CBI) is a parasitic fungal infection that has devastated mankind in HBO's The Last of Us. The Cordyceps brain infection is implied to have been the result of global warming causing mutations in fungi like Cordyceps, allowing it to thrive en-masse via human hosts. This theory was postulated on a late-night talk show in 1968, where two epidemiologists (Neuman and Schoenheiss) discussed the possibility of fungi mutating to cause a global pandemic.
