Formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, the islands are the ancestral homeland of the Haida people, whose culture, art, and traditions have shaped the region for thousands of years. Towering cedar and spruce forests meet rocky beaches and windswept Pacific coastline, while bald eagles, black bears, whales, and other wildlife thrive throughout the islands. Haida Gwaii’s isolation has helped preserve both its remarkable natural environment and its unique cultural identity, earning it a reputation as one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Description: I wanted to make some more fun and cute. And I came up with my rendering of a Haida cat, since cats are so popular on the internet. It's frontal face view, which for me is always hard to get it right with the flow of the formline. Although I'm happy with the result, no doubt that I'll tweak it in the future. Due to my family in British Columbia, for instance Vancouver BC, Haida Formline art has been part of my life. The Pacific Northwest coast is a beautiful place where I spent some happy holidays and a couple of years ago I decided to learn some of its native art. Formline is an indigenous art made by the First Nation people of Northwest coast of North America. The term formline is invented by Bill Holm. We use the word since 1965, but the art is many hundreds of years old. The idea is to create a flowing continuous line with increasing and decreasing thickness. We get negative spaces with a dominant black outline. The negative spaces are filled with formline type ornaments or elements. The main forms are ovoids, U forms and S forms. With these forms the artist composes a complete formline.
