Tryst knelt down so he was eye to eye with Tamlin. The boy wasn’t listening, and he needed this lesson to stick before they got too much further into the woods, “Remember, your job is to be safe.” Tamlin’s eyes lit up immediately, and he rocked forward on his feet, “And YOUR job is to make brave and heroic decisions!” Tryst smirked, and ruffled the kid’s horns, “No, impulsive and reckless, but I like what you’re thinking. Brave and heroic? Huh, Maybe someday.” -art by Jessica Kuczynski

I was inspired by some of Carrie Fisher's comments about the slave costume last year and wanted to recontextualize the outfit as heroic fantasy rather than cheesecake. It's an homage to the king of heroic fantasy, Frank Frazetta, drawing direct inspiration from his A Princess of Mars cover. I feel like the fetishism of the slave costume co-opts the scene from being about Leia's triumph. She's never not powerless in it, she's waiting, as her strangling Jabba to death with the implement of her bondage illustrates. I feel that the costume holds an important place in cosplay. It takes a lot of confidence to wear it and I don't feel like the cultural perspective on it gives it respect for that confidence and the "controversy" surrounding it further disrespects the courage and confidence it should represent. And I think all women have a Jabba in their life at one time or another. Kill your Jabbas, ladies. Metaphorically, of course.

“Sorrow - How do you prove that you exist...? Maybe we don't exist...” —Vivi's quote Vivi Ornitier, occasionally stylized as VIVI, or with the surname Orunitia, is a playable character in Final Fantasy IX. He is a black mage, differentiated from humans by having a black aura surrounding his visible outer skin, glowing yellow eyes, and the ability to cast magic.
