Plant cell mitosis. Light micrograph of a root tip cells squash preparation from an onion (Allium sp.) showing cell division (mitosis). From left to right: the chromosomes condense and appear as long thread-like structures (prophase). They then align along the centre of the cell (metaphase). Each chromosome consists of two identical sister chromatids that separate and are pulled to opposite ends of the cell (anaphase). Nuclear membranes then form around the two daughter nuclei as the chromosomes de-condense (telophase). Magnification: x1000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.

Muscle motor neurones. Light micrograph of dendrites (axons, black) from motor nerve cells (motor neurones) in muscle tissue (pink-purple strands). The nerve extensions branch out and end in structures known as motor end plates. Electrical impulses from the motor neurones trigger chemical changes at the end plates, causing the strands of muscle to contract. Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres across.

Glial cells. Confocal light micrograph of glial cells from the cerebellum of the brain. Glial cells are nervous system cells that provide structural support and protection for neurons (nerve cells). Glial-fibrillary acidic protein, a type of intermediate filament (IF), part of the cell's cytoskeleton, has been dyed yellow. The cytoskeleton is responsible for intracellular transport and cell structure and motility.

Skeletal muscle. Confocal fluorescent light micrograph of a section through fibres (red) of skeletal muscle. Skeletal muscle attaches to joints and long bones, and is under the conscious control of the brain. It consists of parallel muscle fibres sheathed with a sugar-protein complex (green). The fibres themselves are composed of the proteins actin (which appears red here) and myosin. Muscle fibres contract as the actin and myosin slide over one another. Cell nuclei are blue. Dermoid ovarian cyst. Light micrograph of a section through an ovary showing a dermoid, or teratoma, ovarian cyst (centre). This is a benign (non-cancerous) cyst that arises from germ (sex) cells. Because germ cells develop into all the cells of the body, the cyst can contain a variety of different tissues, including bone, tooth and hair (dark purple). Treatment is with surgical removal of the cyst. Magnification: x60 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Human tissue.

HeLa cells. Light micrograph of HeLa cells stained with Coomassie blue. HeLa cells are a continuously cultured cell line of human cervical cancer cells. They are immortal and so thrive in the laboratory. HeLa cells are widely used in biological and medical research.

Vitamin C. Polarised light micrograph of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) crystals. Ascorbic acid is a naturally occurring organic compound and is one form of vitamin C, an essential vitamin that is found in fruit and green vegetables. It is needed for the growth and maintenance of bones, teeth, skin and blood vessels. It is also a powerful antioxidant. Deficiency in vitamin C leads to scurvy, which causes bleeding gums and anaemia. Magnification: x200, when printed 10 centimetres high.

Peripheral nerve. Light micrograph of a section through non-myelinated nerve fibres (axons) aggregated to form a peripheral nerve with a sinusoidal or wave-like organization. This pattern reflects the capacity of the whole nerve bundle to be somewhat flexible and deformable and turn in its course through the supporting connective tissue (epineurium, stained blue). Nuclei associated with the nerve fibres are Schwann cells and fibroblasts. Magnification: x83 when printed at 10 centimetres across.

Nerve cells. Light micrograph of nerve cells (neurones) from the cerebral cortex of the brain. These cells are from the hippocampus, part of the cerebral cortex concerned with memory. The hippocampus is rich in pyramidal cells such as these, which have numerous dendrites (right) trailing from one end of their cell body (dark areas) and one axon projecting from the other (left). Dendrites form junctions communicating with other cells, and signals are then relayed through the cell's axon.

Cerebellum structure. Fluorescent light micrograph of a section through the highly-folded cerebellum of the brain. The tissue has been tagged with fluorescent dyes: cell nuclei are red, neurofilaments are blue and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is green. Neurofilaments are structural proteins found in the axons (output processes) of neurons (nerve cells). The neurofilaments are concentrated in the inner white matter of the cerebellum. The cell nuclei are most abundant in the granular layer of the grey matter. The outer molecular layer of grey matter contains cell nuclei and glial cells rich in GFAP. Magnification: x40 when printed 10cm wide.

Microprocessor components. Light micrograph of an Intel Pentium microprocessor's clock driver, code cache and instruction fetch units. The clock driver regulates all the internal operations by the central processing unit (CPU). The cache memory (SRAM) stores data so that future requests can be served faster. In the instruction fetch unit the instruction is fetched from the memory address. The chip was fabricated by photolithography, using several overlapping metalization layers and vertical contacts to interconnect them in a mono-crystal silicon wafer, which serves as the substrate. Magnification: x22, when printed 10 centimetres wide.

Venule. Light micrograph of a section through a venule, part of the venous system. These vessels arise from capillaries and are characterized by a widening diameter and the acquisition of fibroblasts and mesenchymal cells (collectively pericytes) that associate with the external aspect of the venule wall. Magnification: x460 when printed at 10 centimetres across.

Tooth. Light micrograph of a section through a tooth. At the centre of the tooth is the dental pulp (white), which contains the blood vessels and nerves. The majority of the tooth consists of dentine (purple), which is mineralised connective tissue. The tooth is covered by a coat of white enamel (dark purple), the hardest tissue in the human body.

Cell division. Immunofluorescent light micrograph of a human epithelial cell (centre) during the late anaphase stage of mitosis. Mitosis is the cycle of replication and division by which new body cells are formed. Here the chromosomes (blue) of the parent cell have duplicated and the pairs are being pulled apart by microtubules (spindles, green) to opposite poles of the cell, in a process called cytokinesis. When the cell has split, two identical daughter cells are formed.
