Long Way Stickers

Some nights do their best to discourage photographers from going out. On this night in June, I headed out to teach a night sky workshop only to be greeted with thick clouds across the entire sky. So, instead of teaching Milky Way photography, I taught the participants about capturing ultra-long exposures of streaky clouds, and then later, about light painting. Just as we were setting up for a few last light painting shots -- and right when I got out my camera to remote trigger a shot while light painting for the participants -- the clouds parted in front of the Milky Way. They stayed that way for 15 minutes before closing back up again. No one could really believe it, but they all agreed that they were happy I'd dragged them out rega...

The reflection of Mount Rundle may have still been covered by the ice, but the spring melt meant that this starry night was perfectly reflected in Two Jack Lake for the first time in months.

Earlier this week, I made plans to head out to Banff to shoot sunrise followed by a quick jaunt to Moraine Lake. Then my partner pointed out to me that I might as well kill two birds with one stone and get there a bit early to shoot the Milky Way. I thought that sounded like a great idea until I rolled out of bed at 1.30am, with the goal of arriving in Banff with time to shoot the Milky Way for about 30 minutes before first light. I somehow made it up Mount Norquay by 3.30am and this was the scene that greeted me. Definitely worth the early start time!

The Milky Way stretches across the sky, high above Lake Wyaralong and the setting, nearly-new moon. The moon was actually only a tiny sliver, which is why its light didn't hide the stars.

What a perfect night at Lake Somerset in south east Queensland. We could clearly see the Milky Way with the naked eye as we sat on the lake's muddy shores listening to the buzzing insects and the calls of birds. I love star season!

As Long As Everything Is Exactly The Way I Want, I Can Be Totally Flexible

The Milky Way was bright in the sky once the (almost new) moon went down -- so much so that it was even reflected on the calm waters of Lake Wyaralong!

Our cabin for the weekend at Big River Caravan Park on the Clarence River near Grafton, NSW. That feeling of amazement when you look up and can see the Milky Way with the naked eye will never get old.

Love you, to the moon and back

I never thought I'd be able to shoot a 30 second exposure of a tree without it moving, but that's how calm our first night on Hamilton Island was. A stark change from a few days later, when the winds were 20-25 knots!

This crawler type farm tractor is located at the Traver Ranch on the Carriizo Plain National Monument in California. The tractor is a Cletrac built by the Cleveland Tractor Company.

The Ireland Way runs north-south through both Northern Ireland and Ireland. It joins the Ulster Way Trail and the Beara-Breifne Trail for a total distance of roughly 1000 kilometers or 620 miles.

The Milky Way lights up the sky above the Boathouse at the Bicheno Hideaway on Tasmania's east coast. There's few places that I've seen more stars!
