Magilla promptly threw his hat into the political ring, setting off a comical rivalry with his fellow cartoon characters. The producers of The Magilla Gorilla Show embraced the gag and expanded it into a mock presidential campaign timed to coincide with the real 1964 election between President Lyndon B. Johnson and Senator Barry Goldwater. The promotion featured cartoon candidates campaigning alongside their real-world counterparts, and while Johnson may have won the actual election, Magilla and his cartoon friends ran a spirited campaign—and really, isn't giving it your best what it's all about?
