The discovery photograph of the positron, the positive version of the electron & the first antimatter particle to be discovered. The cloud chamber photo was taken in 1932 by US physicist Carl Anderson. It shows the track of a positive particle that enters the chamber from below. The particle is known to be positive because of the way it bends in the chamber's magnetic field; & it is proved to be moving up the picture because it loses energy & curves more in the magnetic field after traversing the 6 mm thick lead plate in the middle. But the track is too faint to be caused by a proton; it was exactly like an electron's track; it had to be the predicted positron.

Electron flow. Computer model representing the flow of electrons through a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The 'gas' is composed of many free electrons, which can move around in only one plane. The 2DEG possesses an electric potential. Irregularities in this potential produce a 'bumpy' surface. The model shows the paths taken by electrons released one at a time into the gas. The negatively-charged electrons were deflected by the bumps in the gas, producing a branching pattern, with the greatest density of electrons represented by the darkest areas. The electron flow was modelled by Professor Eric Heller, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

Quasicrystal. Computer model of a quasicrystal generated by the addition of nine equally-spaced particles behaving like waves (showing wave- particle duality). The waves met at the centre of the yellow "sun", producing a quasicrystal. Within the sun the pattern approximates to a mathematical Bessel function; there is regular repetition, concentric circles forming about the centre. As the pattern moves outwards from the sun, this order is lost, with similar structures appearing at irregular intervals. The yellow "slice" is one repeating unit of the pattern. The quasicrystal was modelled by Professor Eric Heller, Harvard University, USA.
