The Columbian Mammoth is an extinct animal that inhabited warmer regions of North America during the Pleistocene. Here, three approach over a grassy slope with distant, snow capped mountains behind them. The Columbian Mammoth is a bit less popular than it's cousin the woolly mammoth. It's not known though if it was a furry or if it was more hairless like a modern elephant. It inhabited warmer regions. In fact, bones have been found in Georgia not too far from where I live. Coelodonta antiquitatis, otherwise known as the woolly rhinoceros, was a large member of the Rhino family that inhabited Europe and Northern Asia from the Late Pliocene to the Late Pleistocene. Like many Ice Age megafauna, the Woolly Rhino was covered in thick fur and fat reserves, unlike it’s mostly hairless modern day relatives. The average adult rhino weighed in at around 4000-6000lbs and measured somewhere around 9-12 feet in length. Ice Age cave paintings show evidence of interactions with early humans, which is a possible reason for their eventual extinction.

Megaloceros giganteus otherwise known as the Irish Elk, one of the largest deer species in the fossil record. Measuring 6.9 feet, with the largest antlers of any deer species, measuring 12 feet in width. Despite it’s name it was not exclusively native to Ireland, nor was it actually an elk. Most of the best and most complete specimens were found in Ireland, with some of the antlers winding up on the walls in medieval castles. Megaloceros lived during the Middle pleistocene to the early holocene 0.781 – 0.008 million years ago.

Under a veil of moonlight, a giant pushes its way through the edge of an ancient forest, massive legs plow slowly through deep snow, crashing through the stillness of the night making sure not to tangle the even more massive antlers that adorn its head.

Just south of the Kentucky/Ohio border, in the North River Region of Kentucky, is a Big Bone Lick State Park. The inappropriate sounding name comes from a natural 'lick,' which is a place with salt in the ground where animals converge to literally lick the salt needed for their diets. The area has been being frequented by animals since at least the Pleistocene era, so mastodons and other prehistoric beasts came here to get salt and, instead, met their end. The soil of the lick is not just salty, but swampy, much like the La Brea Tar Pits of Southern California, except with mud instead of tar. European explorers stumbling upon the area in the mid 1700s were stunned by the massive bones they found protruding from the ground.

The Pleistocene is an epoch on the geological time scale that lasted between 2,588,000 and 11,500 years ago. The name comes from the Greek πλεῖστος (plestos, "most") and καινός (kainos, "new"). The Pleistocene followed the Pliocene and was followed by the Holocene and was the third epoch of the Neogene period. The end of the Pleistocene corresponds to the end of the Paleolithic Age known in archaeology.

Ursus spelaeus, otherwise known as the Cave Bear, was a species of bear that ranged throughout Europe and Asia during the Pleistocene in the last major Ice Age event, roughly 25,000 to 24,000 years ago. They were one of the largest species of Ice Age bears with big males standing upright at 11.5 feet and weighing in at a maximum estimated weight of around 2,200 pounds. Females were considerably smaller, the largest specimens being estimated at 550 pounds. Despite their immense size evidence shows that they most likely fed on an herbivorous diet. There is direct evidence of a possible predator prey relationship between Cave Bears and Neanderthals and other early hominid species, including cave paintings, and evidence of butchering.
