Inheriting land at Needwood in Maryland at an early age, Outerbridge Horsey - yes, that was his name - about 1839, determined not just to farm it, but to establish a distillery. His initial operations appear to have been small with mainly local whiskey sales, in keeping with the Maryland farmer-distiller traditions of that era. Horsey’s method of aging his whiskey was unusual for the times and brought fame to his operation. He sent barrels via ship around Cape Horn to San Francisco and then by railroad back to Maryland for bottling. His theory was that sloshing around inside barrels on the high seas mellowed and aged the whiskey in beneficial ways that sedentary storing in warehouses failed to do.

Despite Rye in East Sussex being such a tourist honeypot, many of its historic streets can be found completely empty of tourists - such as West Street painted here on a hot sunny day.

I've always wanted to see what Rye looks like at dusk, and this year I got the opportunity for a walk around the town as night fell. One view that I caught just right was looking West along Church Street, which I've recreated here in oil on a 16x12 inch board. I normally paint wet into wet, but to get the high contrast between the colours of the buildings I've had to allow layers to dry at times. So this painting has taken over two weeks to complete.

The Catcher in the Rye is a novel by American author J. D. Salinger that was partially published in serial form 1945–46 before being novelized in 1951. Originally intended for adults, it is often read by adolescents for its themes of angst and alienation, and as a critique of superficiality in society.

Another view painted from my trips to Rye. This small (8x8 inch) oil painting is from the very top of Lion Street, with the last shop, right outside the church door. With the bulk of the church to the South its a shady passage, but you get interesting effects from the light that makes it there.

Rye in East Sussex is a beautiful little town draped over a small hill. In Roman times it was by the coast and I would have had my feet wet painting this view, but the sea now is around 2 miles away, and the foot of the hill is a bustling area of antique shops, cafes and tourists. Painted in oil on a 16x12 inch board.

Just a quick print design whilst I'm busy working on a new project and in the middle of moving house. As a whisky fan myself, I find distilling process interesting and the rough asthetic of the oak barrels often used I think look great.
