The Curfew Tower at Windsor Castle seen from the Eton bank of the River Thames in Berkshire. Windsor Castle is the largest and oldest occupied castle in the world and is the 'weekend residence' of the Queen and Royal Family. The original castle was a Norman motte and bailey construction - part of a ring of such castles encircling London. Later, King Henry I used it as a residence. This tower, originally built in the 1220s was used as a belfry from 1477 - granted by Edward IV.Eight bells hang there dating from 1612 to 1898. A monochrome view across the River Thames of Windsor Castle's famous Round Tower overshadowing the town. . The tower itself sits on an artificial mound or 'motte', the original being built by Henry II in c1170. The present tower is a remodelling under George IV in the 1820s. The castle has always been a Royal residence, a retreat from the centre of London. Below it the River Thames has always been a highway to and from London, at one time the main route.

A footpath winding through the Thames side meadows at Eton leading to Windsor in Berkshire, Across the Thames is the town dominated by its Castle - the out of town residence of the Royal Family. Built in the C11th as an outer London fortification, by William I, it was Henry i (1068-1135) who started to use it as a residence. This image, originally captured on film in 1987, depicts a royal guard. A lot of Windsor Castle is open to the public, but this image is a peek into the royally private part of the castle. The lonely soldier standing guard in front of his sentry box, the flagstones beneath his feet glistening with the wet of the recent rain, and the magnificent stonework. I think it's a cool image; I hope you do too.

This image, originally captured on film, is of the entrance to what I believe are lodgings for the Military Knights of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, the world's oldest chivalric order. Above the doorway is the emblem of the order, which, with the exception to the Victoria Cross and George Cross, is the most senior order of knighthood in the British honours system. Membership is extremely limited: the monarch (Queen), the Prince of Wales, and twenty-four members appointed by the monarch. It seems that the order dates back to when Edward III established it in 1348. Standing on the banks of the River Thames at Eton and looking across to the town of Windsor with its historic royal castle dominating the skyline. There has been a castle here since the time of William I and it started its life as a royal residence in the early 1100s uder Henry 1. The river has always played an important part in Windsor's life, having been the main route to London until roads eventually improved. From an original Engraving from the Illustrated London News December 1848 The publication of this image spread the use of Christmas Trees like wildfire, and led wrongly to the belief that Albert had introduced the Christmas Tree to Britain. It was actually Queen Charlotte, the German born wife of George III, for a party she held in 1800 Please note there may be some age related marks from the original which will show also on any print ordered. This is inevitable with prints of this age & actually lends an authentic look to the print in my opinion.
