Michael McKean was no stranger to blurring the lines between fake band and real band. He later became the singer of Spinal Tap. And there's a fascinating connection between his two kind-of-real groups — Christopher Guest played guitar as Nigel Tufnel on the Lenny & The Squigtones album. Oh, and Peter Criss of KISS wiped off the makeup to be the drummer, "Ming the Merciless." Lenny and Squiggy were not the only characters from the show to drop real albums. Laverne and Shirley themselves released a record, too.

In the mid-1970s, Billy Squier encountered his first real experience with the music industry after striking a record deal with his new band Piper, which went on to release two studio records, Piper and Can't Wait. The band was praised by critics: reviewing the self-titled album, Circus magazine touted it as "the greatest debut album ever produced by a US rock band". Piper was managed by the same management company as Kiss and opened for them during their 1977 tour, including two nights of a sold-out run at New York's Madison Square Garden. Squier served as both main songwriter and frontman of the group.

Based in Georgia in the 80s, Fortnox could be described a storming power trio led by guitarist/vocalist Rick Fowler, who were signed to Epic records. In an enterprising move the label hooked them up with up with Chris Tsangarides (Ozzy Osbourne, Thin Lizzy) who took control of recording the band's sole album, in Atlanta. The results were remarkably impressive, leaving those who heard the recordings to predict big things for the band. The album received positive reviews but despite extensive touring, playing with the likes of Aerosmith, Cheap Trick and April Wine, support from the label began to dwindle, leaving the band vulnerable to forces beyond their control. WHAT IF THEY WOULD HAVE MADE IT and been honored on the HWOF?
