In 1971, in Orlando, Florida, WKIS-FM was purchased by Shamrock Development Company. The new management installed an progressive rock format, switching the call sign to WDIZ. Over time, the station's playlist focused on the top selling albums and rock artists, as the station shifted to album-oriented rock.
Captain Video and His Video Rangers is an American science fiction television series that aired on the DuMont Television Network and was the first series of its genre on American television. The series aired between June 27, 1949, and April 1, 1955, originally on Monday through Saturday at 7 p.m. ET, and then Monday through Friday at 7 p.m. ET. A separate 30-minute spinoff series called The Secret Files of Captain Video aired Saturday mornings, alternating with Tom Corbett, Space Cadet, from September 5, 1953, to May 29, 1954, a total of 20 episodes.

In 1968, WIIN was a Top 40 format AM station in Atlanta, GA. During the early 1970s WIIN changed format to progressive rock under a new local owner. WIIN was, for a while, Atlanta's only progressive rock station and quickly became known for introducing new rock music to the Atlanta market. WIIN became an adult standards/easy listening station in the late 1970s. In the early 1980s, the station changed its call letters to WKLS and format to album rock, as a simulcast of 96.1 WKLS-FM (now WWPW). The simulcast lasted until 1988 when the station was sold.

KOYL-FM went on the air April 5, 1966, the sister station to KOYL 1310 AM. KOYL-FM offered separate programming during the day and the AM's country format at night when 1310 was off the air. KOYL-FM broadcast with 34,000 watts horizontal polarization at 100 feet above average terrain.
In 1979, KOYL-AM-FM was sold by the Roskelleys (Mid Cities Broadcasting) to Stream Broadcasting The new ownership also built a new FM transmitter facility that was more centrally located between Odessa and Midland and enabled the station to upgrade to 100,000 watts.
