St. James Church (Grote of St.-Jacobskerk) at The Hague - 10-03-15 Blasting in the Sun The St. James Church (Grote of St.-Jacobskerk) is situated in The Hague and I pass it by often. Then one day the sun was bursting out of the sky. Consequently the church rooftop was blasting in the sun. Struck by the light I was and the church was heavily backlighted and dark at the bottom. It almost hurt my eyes and so I rendered the scene expressionistically. Mondriaan In fact I had this idea coming already for a long time. The yellow spotted sky I borrowed as an idea of Mondriaan. The Hague Golf & Country club (2014) Light Show On invitation by one of my students I visited The Hague Golf & Country Club where I saw the gateway to the club. Oh boy, how it turned into one big light show of yellows and oranges during autumn! It look as if the scenery was set on fire. Of course the sun atributed its part by casting great light sideway into the leaves. I strongly thought of Pissarro when I made this impressionistic pastel, creating more like a blur of leaves after the fashion of great impressionism. Hatertse Vennen When doing this I also thought of the use of color in a previous pastel drawing ‘Hatertse Vennen 02 (2012)’. Though that one had a lot more of hatched strokes in it. A digital 'painting' of tram making its way through the streets of The Hague early morning on a day in December. The sunrise is just picking out the tram tracks and is beginning to light up the buildings.

Not the first time that I drew this particular church. In 2015 I made a pastel. This time the angle was steeper. The effect of the light on the roof tiles and the zigzag pattern reminded me of the appearance of a jagged knife.

The Court Pond (De Hofvijver) Situated in the heart of The Hague (Den Haag) The Court Pond (De Hofvijver) is next to the Tweede Kamer (dutch Parliament) at the Binnenhof. It is a great spot to linger about and to me symbolizes the quiet, almost village-like character of the center of this old city. If The Hague ever were to have a unique landmark, this certainly would be a strong candidate. Basic Geometry I wanted to break up the scene into three basic geometrical forms: circles, plains and triangles. Therefor this wish is a natural continuation of abstracting forms into basic ones further like in my drawing Roundism – 26-11-16. Pittoresque A pastel drawing of Estate ‘Reigersbergen’ adjacent to the Haagse Bos in quite some impressionistic moves. You can see me walk there very often because I live close by. Because of my artistic activities and my need to keep up my condition I take 10.000 steps per day. Consequently this leads me to this area automatically because all other directions lead to concrete buildings and flats only. The estate forms a link between The Haagse Bos and Estate ‘Marlot’. It is an intimate and small area in spite of the arrival of the Louwman Museum. Somehow it has kept its variety of different landscapes: meadows, treelines, woods and narrow paths. I love cities. My plans and skyline prints are drawn in a minimalist and pure style. When choosing the cities, I follow my inclinations. In addition to Berlin, there are also Tel Aviv, New York and Lisbon and soon many more. Take a look every now and then. The print is part of the 44spaces city map series.
