Chorio, the old capital of the island of Halki (Chalki), with 4,000 inhabitants in its heyday, was gradually abandoned and is now quite deserted and mostly in ruins, although it was once the only settlement on Halki. Chorio is built around the hill upon which the remains of the fortress stands (the Kastro, the castle of the medieval Knights of St John), and has some interesting old style stone houses. The town was built in a position concealed from view from the sea, and high above the initial maraudings of pirates. Halki is a small yet very charming island, part of the Dodecanese Group of Greek islands, situated opposite the west coast of the Island of Rhodes.
