The hilltop town of Mojacar in Andalucia, Spain is situated on the Mediterranian coast. The town lies about 2 Km from the beach area, Mojacar Playa. Although largely modern now, the town has a very long and distinguished history and gained importance as a Moorish stronghold on the frontier with Christian Spain. Over the years the population moved away, largely due to extended droughts but more recently Mojacar became home to artists and is now a thriving holiday destination. Nikon D200 Nikkor 18-200

A cave dwelling and patio in Alhabia, my nearest village in Almeria, Andalucia, Spain. A simple composition but an interesting subject for capturing light and shade in the dazzling sunshine of Andalucia. This painting is the subject of a tutorial I was asked to write for a new magazine, The Beginner's Guide to Watercolours, which is due to be published on the 15th April 2021. Unlike most cathedrals in Spain, construction of this cathedral had to await the acquisition of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada from its Muslim rulers in 1492; while its very early plans had Gothic designs, such as are evident in the Royal Chapel of Granada by Enrique Egas, the construction of the church in the main occurred at a time when Spanish Renaissance designs were supplanting the Gothic regnant in Spanish architecture of prior centuries. A watercolour sketch of an abandoned, isolated little cottage in a valley at the end of the Rambla de Las Negras just outside the village where I live in Southern Spain. A lovely subject to paint with the play of light, the textures and the colours of the aloe vera and bougainvillaea in flower. These paintings offer affordable art to visitors to our village although they can still be purchased by collectors on line. They are painted using the same professional pigments and on the same heavy Arches watercolour paper which I use for my more detailed and expensive work. María Dolores Flores Ruiz (21 January 1923 – 16 May 1995) was a Spanish singer, actress, dancer and bussinesswoman. Referred to as "La Faraona" since the 1950s, Lola is known for her overwhelming personality onstage. Although for the music critics she didn't know how to sing. As a bailaora, she enraged several generations of continents, although she distanced herself from flamenco canons. Lola performed more than 35 films, pigeonholed, in many of them, in Andalusian folklore, although she also interpreted rumbas and rancheras.

It was under Moorish rule from the 8th-15th centuries, a legacy that shows in its architecture, including such landmarks as the Alcázar castle in Seville, the capital city, as well as Córdoba’s Mezquita Mosque-Cathedral and Granada’s Alhambra palace.
