Most are familiar with Thor, god of thunder, and his war hammer, Mjölnir, but from whence did this mighty, magical mallet materialize? Mjölnir was forged by two bristly dwarf brothers who lived deep in the caverns of the dwarf homeland, Svartalfheim. The artwork representing this story has many of the details from the mythology. If you look closely, you can see all the gifts created by the dwarves scattered around them with the mighty Mjölnir sitting at the center above the anvil. You can see the trickster, Loki in fly form near Brokkr’s eye. Of all of the symbols in Norse mythology, Thor’s Hammer (Old Norse Mjöllnir, pronounced roughly “MIOL-neer”) is one of the most historically important, and is probably the best known today. Thor was the indefatigable god who guarded Asgard, the celestial stronghold of the Aesir, the main tribe of gods and goddesses in Norse mythology. The giants, the forces of chaos, were often trying to destroy Asgard and kill the Aesir, and it was Thor’s task to prevent them from doing so.

In Norse mythology, from which stems most of our information about the god, Odin is associated with healing, death, knowledge, battle, poetry and the runic alphabet among other things.
