The ancient sources give some clues as to who lived in the Mesopotamian marshland and what the landscape looked like in the first millennium. Two terms are used in the written sources to refer to the marshland in southern Babylonia: agammu “marsh, swamp” and appāru “reed marsh, canebrake”. The Sealand was inhabited by Chaldeans and Aramaeans. Ashur, also spelled Assur, modern Qalʿat Sharqāṭ, ancient religious capital of Assyria, located on the west bank of the Tigris River in northern Iraq. During those times city states each had a god. The God Ashur has the same name as the capital city of Assyria. The assyrians also took the local gods of the city states that they conquered back to their capital of Ashur.
