G.I. Joe's initial 1964 product offering represented four of the branches of the U.S. armed forces with the Action Soldier (U.S. Army), Action Sailor (U.S. Navy), Action Pilot (U.S. Air Force), Action Marine (U.S. Marine Corps) and later on, the Action Nurse. The name derived from the usage of "G.I. Joe" for the generic U.S. soldier, itself derived from the more general term "G.I.". The development of G.I. Joe led to the coining of the term "action figure". In 1982 G.I. Joe came back in a big way with a line of 3.75" action figures coupled with cartoons and comic books.

In Japan, Takara released 24 G.I.Joe & Cobra figures in 1986. These figures were just like their U.S. counterparts, but were offered on more vibrant card backs with a Japanese market-specific logo and a mix of Japanese Kanji and American English text. The subtext over the logo read "We are here to help . let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go." followed by "The strongest extracurricular team on the ground." There were however some differences here and there, one of which was that Zartan was offered as a single-carded figure that did not include his Swamp Skier vehicle.

The Dreadnoks are a fictional biker gang from the G.I. Joe universe who are affiliated with Cobra as shock troops, offering their mercenary services as subordinates of their leader, Zartan. All Dreadnoks are uncouth and violent, and usually engage their enemies with unconventional and creative (many times crude) weaponry. Most, if not all, have shown a particular taste for chocolate-covered donuts and grape soda. The Dreadnoks also make a habit of torturing captured enemies, usually in bizarre ways such as exposure to pain-inducing laughing gas or tossing victims into pools of man-eating piranhas. Their headquarters is a compound hidden somewhere in the Florida Everglades.

I think the fine people of Iraq need their own 80's badass squad of soldiers. So GI Joe has become Jeem Yay Joe (the closest approximation in Arabic). The Arabic text along the bottoms says "The Real Iraqi Hero."
