Saint Michael, the Archangel, On the corner niches of many buildings in Valletta are to be found sculptures, mainly Christian in nature, and often near or on church buildings. The tradition of setting up niches in streets dates back to the Roman era. In Christian times, images of Christ, Our Lady and Christian Saints, replaced those of Roman Gods. These niches were often decorated and lit, thus paying homage to the image within, as well as providing some illumination during the night. Canon 6D, zoom lens.

Edinburgh on a beautiful day of summer, a day filled with glorious Scottish sun, when the stone absorbs light and the city lives up to its unofficial title of Athens of the North. I walk alone, along streets, and crescent, and through squares, familiar and unchanged since childhood, inhaling the city’s scent. It is fresh, filled with flowers and with the thick, malty smell of distant breweries. It feels timeless, Eden-like, dreach wet days of fog, sleet and rain forgotten and forgiven. I want time to stand still, for the day of sun and light to never end. The crescent sweeps round, creating an illusion of infinity. The work is rich in light and colour, with satisfying detail. A familiar corner of London, of Soho. A place of loud voices and clinking glasses, a vibe of pure energy, of socialising and Bacchanalian pleasure, of joy and youth. Beer, wine, crisps, a whiff of nicotine. It is late afternoon, on Friday, and the weekend stretches with its promise of brunches and candlelit dinners, of walks by the Thames and picnics in parks. I know the area so well. It is embedded in my psyche. This work depicts a corner pub, rich in detail, in light and shadow.

This work depicts a street corner in London, a place made remarkable by its eclectic architecture, a place of magic where turrets pierce the blue sky, garrets and glimpses into a dozen private worlds. I marvel at the contrasting colours, reddish and ochre Victorian brick, seeped in hundred year old soot, and smooth walls of burgundy plaster. A place that never seems to change, that always offers the same, a simple choice, to be taken or left, over decades. I cannot remember when I first saw this café and I don’t think I have ever eaten here, but I am glad it exists, an anchor, a source of Proustian scent, of bacon, toast, grease and coffee. I pause to look at the choices, taunting myself, mulling the range of cheese sandwiches, ham, peanut butter and more. Beyond London stretches outwards, and I make ready to move on, into Bloomsbury or up to Kings Cross. But for this moment I inhale once more the scent of the full English. A lovely gift from London, a fantastic souvenir, rich in detail, in colour and in atmosphere.

A long walk on the lower edges of the New Town, soothed by the gentle heat, refreshed by the air that hints of lands beyond the Forth, of pine and heather and sea salt. The sky is so blue, so deep. It is a unique light, a rare treat, casting a spell of sorcery and magic, turning the stone to gold and the windows to crystal and sapphire. This view is rich in vivid colour, rich in detail and rich in detail. It makes an ideal gift, a wonderful addition to any collection.

Walking east, across the river Hull, I enjoy the stillness of Sunday morning. The pavement already feels warm, a scent of tarmac and the brine of the Humber. Unfamiliar now, memories of childhood stirred as I remember the direction of the road. I pause outside a pub, and I decide I want to paint it, enjoying its solidity and nostalgia. There is a red lion over the door, red bricks and chalk boards, an invitation to enter and enjoy a cheerful evening. The work is full of colour, a perfect souvenir of Hull, a great gift.
