Bear Crossing at Wild Rivers Recreation New Mexico by Debra Martz Leaving the Chiflo stop, travel another approximate one mile south into the Wild Rivers Recreation Area and you come to the stop for Bear Crossing. This is one of a few trails that I have not hiked here. It is outside of the fee area and the does not receive the same level of upkeep that the longer trails do which are within the fee area. This trail is rated as Extremely Difficult and within 25 feet at the beginning of the trailhead I always turn around with a same thought, " still not for me!" This view is looking west, toward the Sangre de Cristo mountains, across the Pinyon-Juniper landscape topped with beautiful clouds. Clouds! Chawalauna Overlook at Wild Rivers Recreation New Mexico 3 by Debra Martz If you take the first right after stopping at the pay station, the Chawalauna Overlook is the next place for amazing views. There is not a trailhead here into the gorge but there are views both upstream and downstream (this view) of the Rio Grande. You can see where the other trails reach the river and backcountry campsites at the bottom of the gorge, where ponderosa pines offer tall shade if you decide to trout fish. If you are not camping up on the rim, this overlook offers parking to the Rinconada 6 mile loop trail which is on a well kept gravel path. It passes by all of the rim campgrounds of both the Rio Grande and Red River. When we camp here, if not ...
