Inspired by the stories of H.P. Lovecraft. Ruins are discovered in Australia’s Great Sandy Desert, and Miskatonic University's Professor Peaslee organizes an expedition to Australia to investigate. Professor Peaslee's Great Sandy Desert Expedition which steamed to Australia aboard the SS Wheezy Lexington, to search for the Yithian which featured in the Lovecraft story, The Shadow Out of Time.

The first seed of the story's first chapter The Horror in Clay came from one of Lovecraft's own dreams he had in 1919,[3] which he described briefly in two different letters sent to his friend Rheinhart Kleiner on May 21 and December 14, 1920. In the dream, Lovecraft is visiting an antiquity museum in Providence, attempting to convince the aged curator there to buy an odd bas-relief Lovecraft himself had sculpted. The curator initially scoffs at him for trying to sell something recently made to a museum of antique objects. Lovecraft then remembers himself answering the curator:

I am Providence. You are Providence. We are Providence. They are Providence. Celebrate the greatness of Lovecraft with this clean, simple statement. Horror fans can show some New England appreciation for the hometown of Cthulhu by wearing this with pride...

H. P. Lovecraft is one of my favourite authors. I love not only his stories, but also the role-playing game, "Call of Cthulhu", and the various film adaptations of his work, such as "Reanimator". In this painting, I've depicted the house Lovecraft inhabited from 1904 to 1922, at 454 Angell Street, Providence. It still stands today.

To know his is to go mad, and Mr. Chambers' macabre creation had admirers as grand as Lovecraft, who wrote what might be termed fan references into his stories.
