This is a mon I saw on the hanten of the Komagata team during the recent Sanja Matsuri. The Sanja Matsuri is one of the three largest Shinto festivals of Tokyo. The mon looks like an ancient wooden wheel where the rim is fat and made in sections. It creates a pleasing geometric pattern. The mon is similar to the coat of arms from European heraldic tradition. Although, there is a big difference, the mon stays clean and minimalistic in design. European crests tend to get very complicated by combining other family crests over the generations. What an amazing sight this was. The few of us that were on Mon Repos beach late in the afternoon were treated to the sight of four hatchlings, stragglers from a nest that hatched the night befoe, as they made their first run to the sea. This poor girl in particular got tossed around by the waves, but eventually she made it out to the open sea. Hopefully she'll be returning back to the same beach in 30 years time to lay her own batch of hatchlings!

Penmon or Trwyn Du (Black Point) Lighthouse is on the SE coast of Anglesey Island (Ynys Mon), North Wales. It stands between Dinnor Point and Ynys Seriol (Puffin Island), marking the passage between the two islands and the northern entrance to the Menai Strait. It was constructed between 1835 and 1838 and originally had two keepers but has been unmanned since 1922.
