Big Carb for the Hotrod

El Mirage, located in the California Mojave desert, has been the place to be for all out speed records since the 1930s. This Ford Model A roadster looks right at home on the dry lakebed with its 32 grill, tonneau cover and lack of windshield. Grab your helmet and goggles, step on the gas and hang on!

What is now known as "STP" was invented by German scientists during WWII as a response to Germany's need for lubrication of the German war-machine vehicles. WWII US Army divisions in Africa that overtook German Afrika Korps vehicles alleged that the Germans employed an engine oil that is now known as STP formulation full-strength in their air-cooled 4-cylinder engines, which successfully traveled through the hot African Desert war-front without seizing due to friction and extreme heat. How the Germans' original chemical synthesis formulation found its way to the U.S. after WWII is not known, but most likely it made that journey along with many of the other German innovations through the distribution of technology through the spoils of war.

Don Nicholson (May 28, 1927 – January 24, 2006) was an American drag racer from Missouri. He raced in the 1960s and 1970s when there were few national events. The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) estimates he won 90 percent of his match races.

By the early ’60s, Bill Jenkins had developed something of a cult following among East Coast racers, who knew that a Jenkins Competition engine significantly increased one’s odds of winning races and when he wasn’t building race-winning engines, he was winning races driving his own cars, further cementing his name in the drag racing history books.
