The cross at the heart of Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland. Dunkeld Cross is home to the Atholl memorial fountain, erected in 1866 in memory of the 6th Duke of Atholl. Dunkeld was the first ecclesiastical capital of Scotland, proclaimed by Scotland's first king, Kenneth MacAlpin. Just to the south of Dunfermline's High Street lies one of Scotland's most unusual churches. The Abbey Church of Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland is two very distinct churches, joined in the middle. The effect is unexpected but attractive. The Abbey Church, as the name suggests, was the church serving Dunfermline Abbey. A church probably already existed on this site in 1070, when King Malcolm III married Queen Margaret. Margaret liked Dunfermline so much she set up a Benedictine foundation here. This was later transformed by her son King David I into what was intended to become the most important abbey in Scotland. Work was started in 1128 on the Abbey Church and the nave still survives as the western half of the building on view today.

St Mary's, or Ratho Parish Church on the northern edge of the village of Ratho, near Edinburgh, Scotland. Parts of St Mary's can be dated as far back as the 1100s, and it has been steadily added to and expanded since: to the point where the later extensions almost completely hide the original church. Hard Times Create Strong Men

Auchindoun Castle, near Dufftown, Moray, Scotland. This castle has had a very violent life and not held by anyone for very long. It was built in the 15th century for the Earl of Mar. The Earl of Mar was murdered by his brother (James III) and the tower house passed to Robert Cochrane. Cochrane was hanged in 1482 and it was taken over by the Ogilvies but went to the Gordons in 1535. The Mackintoshes raged through it in 1591 in revenge for the murder of the Bonnie Earl o' Moray. Gordon was killed in 1594 at the Battle of Glenlivet. Auchindoun was restored after the Mackintoshes wrecked it, but by 1725 the stone work was being used for building material in nearby areas. A Berber woman in traditional Berber costume in the Medina (the Arabic old town) in Tunis, Tunisia, North Africa. Just a tiny fraction of the incredible decorative sculptures which adorn the outside of the Sagrada Familia. To give you an idea of scale, these carvings are lifesize. The Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia or simply Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudí’s unfinished masterpiece. Construction started in 1882 and is expected to continue until at least 2041. The volcanic mound known as Beblowe Craig, and sited on top of it is Lindisfarne Castle, one of the most distinct and picturesque features of the Holy Island, Northumberland, England. The castle can be seen for many miles around. Following the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII, it was built in 1550 in defence of the realm against attack by Scotland and in persuit of their Spanish allies. Constructed of stone taken from the Priory the most interesting recent feature (1997) has been the re-facing of north-facing walls which featured the use of Yak hair in the render. The Kirk of Calder in Mid-Calder, West Lothian, Scotland is a beautiful village church which comes with a fascinating history and, over the years, a bewildering variety of names. Sometimes referred to as the Parish Kirk of Midcalder, it was until the Reformation known as St Cuthbert's. At various times since it has been known as Calder Kirk and, briefly, St John's to reflect local links with the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. The name "Kirk of Calder" dates back to a merger of congregations in 1956 and has a neatness that suits the building well. St Cuthbert's Church was originally built on this site some time around 1150 and was among the properties granted to Dunfermline Abbey in the 1160s.

Crammond Brig (old Scottish for bridge), where the original 15th-century bridge once stood and served as the original coach house for coaches and travelers heading south into Edinburgh. The Brig had immortality bestowed upon it by Sir Walter Scott with his description of how Jock Howieson rescued the disguised King James V from a fight and received lands around Braehead for service to his monarch. The bridge has been replaced by a modern steel and concrete one a little further up the river. Now it forms part of a very pleasant river walk. The "Lanterna" lighthouse is one of the most ancient still in service today. The exterior is formed by two towers divided by cornices with small pensil arches and the interior is occupied by steps leading from ground level to the light. Situated on a rock on the western end of the Port of Genoa, Italy, it is known throughout the world as the emblem of Genoa. It is built on a rocky outcrop, the remains of Promontorio Hill which has been quarried for centuries for stone with which to build the city.
