A pair of narrowboats heading upstream on the Thames and passing through Boulters Lock in Maidenhead, Berkshire.This historic lock was originally calles Ray Mill Lock after the watermill next door (now a restaurant), the first lock keeper being the miller's son John. The lock is probably best known through the painting 'Boulters Lock Sunday Afternoon' by Edward Joihn Gregory (1895) showing a mass of skiffs and punts heading into the lock chamber.

The lock at Iffley on the Thames near Oxford. At this point the river is properly called The Isis and as you walk along the Thames Path from here to Oxford you pass the Oxford University's college boathouses. The village of Iffley itself is a conservation area, its narrow streets leading down to the river where you cross the weir to reach the lock.

Last year, my mom and I spent a day in London taking in the sights. She was even nice enough to shiver on the Westminster Bridge as I took this photo on a cold, stormy January night.

Designed by architect Rafael Viñoly and costing over £200 million, 20 Fenchurch Street features a highly distinctive top-heavy form which appears to burst upward and outward. A large viewing deck, bar and restaurants are included on the top three floors; these are, with restrictions, open to the public.

On his retirement from the Bank of England in 1908, Kenneth Grahame returned to Blewbury in Berkshire, the county in which he had grown up. In October that year he published The Wind in the Willows, a novel for children featuring an array of anthropomorphic characters, including Rat (a water vole), Mole, Toad, and Badger. Toad lives in a house on the edge of the River Bank, Toad Hall. Grahame's description of Toad Hall is sparse: "a handsome, dignified old house of mellowed red brick, with well-kept lawns reaching down to the water's edge".

Halfpenny Bridge and its old tollhouse as seen from the Thames Path at Lechlade in Gloucestershire. This bridge dates from 1792 and marks the start (or finish) of the navigable Thames. Pass through this arch en route upriver and it soon becomes narrower and shallower - no place for river boats! The bridge's name stems from the ha'penny toll paid by pedestrians to cross - this ending in 1839. Lechlade is a picturesque market town at the southern tip of the Cotswolds near the Oxfordshire border.

A footpath winding through the Thames side meadows at Eton leading to Windsor in Berkshire, Across the Thames is the town dominated by its Castle - the out of town residence of the Royal Family. Built in the C11th as an outer London fortification, by William I, it was Henry i (1068-1135) who started to use it as a residence. A coxless pair race past Temple Island at Remenham, Berkshire, very near Henley on Thames. This section of the river is famous for the annual Henley Royal Regatta held in early July. Temple Island is situated between Henley and Hambleden. It dates from 1771 and was designed by the architect James Wyatt as a fishing lodge for a nearby house. It's now owned by Henley Royal Regatta and has been completely restored to its former glory. It marks the start of the regatta course which finishes just below Henley Bridge. After heavy rain, the Thames rushing through Day's Weir near Little Wittenham, Oxfordshire. The Thames Path crosses the river over the lock and weir, carrying on upstream towards Abingdon. Apparently the name for Day's Lock and Weir comes from that of a local Catholic yeoman in the 17th century.

The new foot and cycle bridge over the River Thames at Reading in Berkshire, England, just upstream from the busy road crossing at Reading Bridge. The footbridge, named Christchurch Bridge as the result of a poll, links Caversham to the north with Reading and in particular the station on the south bank. The name reflects historic links with Christchurch Cathedral in Oxford. The bridge was opened in 2017 by the Mayor of Reading with an inaugural game of poohsticks! Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

An artistic view of the bridge over the River Thames at Clifton Hampden in Oxfordshire. This handsome bridge with its gothic arches was built in 1867 to replace a previous ferry service which had existed since medieval times. The architect was Sir George Gilbert Scott who also designed the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras. It was originally a toll bridge but this ended in 1946 when the local councils bought it from the private owners. This view is from the Thames Path national trail.

The regatta course for the Henley Royal Regatta. Along the towpath (aka the Thames Path) at Remenham in Berkshire, is a post marked for a quarter of a mile. The regatta coiurse is 1 mile 550 yards long and starts just downstream from Temple Island (in the background), finishing just downstream of Henley Bridge. A number of barges like this were bought by the Oxford colleges' rowing clubs in the mid 1800s as changing rooms and viewing platforms for spectators during races. They have now been sold off and can be occasionally found as floating function rooms etc. Club houses were built to replace them and can be found near Christ Church Meadows in Oxford.

Goring Lock on the River Thames on a sunny October day. There has been a lock here since the 1500s when it was a flash lock, In the 1700s it was redesigned as a pound lock and was constructed of timber, The present lock dates from the 1920s. Goring-on-Thames is a picturesque village in Oxfordshire and is a haunt of artists (and photographers!). Here the river narrows to pass between the North Wessex Downs and the Chiltern Hills at the point known as the Goring Gap.

Seen from the Thames path between Marlow and Henley-on-Thames, the church of All Saints in the riverside village of Bisham in Berkshire, just upstream of the National Sports Centre. The Grade 2 listed church dates from the 12th century, the oldest remaining part being the tower.

This very elegant town hall sits in the centre of the town of Abingdon-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, England. The town was once in Berkshire and until 1867 was the County Town. The town hall, now a Grade 1 listed building was constructed between 1678 and 1682. It was designed to house the county courtroom above a sheltered market space. Both the master mason, Christopher Kempster and the clerk of works, John Scarborough were associates of Sir Christopher Wren whose influence can be seen. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

famous bridge over the River Thames

The view looking eastwards from Pangbourne in Berkshire, England, towards the Whitchurch toll bridge captured on a late summer afternoon. The toll bridge, one of only two remaining on the Thames joins Pangbourne in Berkshire with Whitchurch on Thames in Oxfordshire. There has been a bridge here since 1792, the present iron one, constructed in 1902 being the third. The author Kenneth Graham lived at Pangbourne, the river being immortalised in his book 'The Wind In The Willows'.

An old brick bridge taking the towpath over a stream at Cookham, Berkshire. It's certainly seen better days but the Thames Path skirts it so you don't have to walk over it! The Thames Path is a long-distance trail which follows the river all the way from Cricklade in the Cotswold Hills to the Thames Barrier in Greenwich, London. Cookham, on the banks of the Thames is a village lying in the furthest north-east corner of Berkshire, England. Here the artist Sir Stanley Spencer lived and painted.

Kew Bridge, August 2020 Bridge over the River Thames (London, England) between Kew (in the county of Surrey) on the South Bank and Brentford (Middlesex) on the North Bank. Opened in 1903, the current bridge is the 3rd to be built across this stretch of the river. Prior to the first bridge being built a ferry was located here. The bridge is 1182 feet (360 metres) long and the largest of the three arches is 133 feet (41 metres). Date: 1st August 2020.
