The Ribblehead Viaduct - a spectacular example of Victorian engineering crossing Batty Moss in the Ribble Valley, North Yorkshire carrying the Settle-Carlisle line. The amazing construction was designed by the Midland Railway's Chief Engineer, John Sydney Crossley. The last stone was laid by the end of 1874, and on 1st May 1876 the whole line opened for passenger traffic. The construction used a workforce of 2300 men of which over 100 unfortunately lost their lives.
