Here you can see the central square of Kayseri the Cumhuriyet Meydani ("Square of the Republic"), with the Yeni Camii ("New Mosque") and the Citadel (the "Ic Kale"="inner fortress") of the old fortified town. It is considered one of the fastest developing cities in Turkey, financially and commercially. The rapid increase of its population proves it. On the other hand, it is also considered one of the most "conservative" cities of Turkey (along with Konya) in religious terms and the Islamic rules are followed strictly. As a consequence, there 's not much to do in Kayseri at night. You can find some extremely good Iskender Kebab, excellent pastirma, but almost no alcohol at all...

The Ihlara Valley (Aksaray, Central Anatolia, Turkey), is on the southwest corner of the imaginary triangle that forms Cappadocia, but quite far from its "heart", which is around Goreme. That's why it's not so crowded as the other valleys of Cappadocia, although it's a place of extreme natural beauty, and great historical and cultural significance with dozes of impressive rock cut churches and monasteries..

The Kapali Carsi of Kayseri, is the 4th biggest covered marked in Turkey. Not as "touristic" as the Kapali Carsi of Istanbul, it is used mostly by the locals. It took its present form in 1853. It is "attached" to an older market, the Bedesten of Kayseri. Camera: Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III

One of the most beautiful sights of Kayseri, is the Bedesten, the old covered market, constructed on 1497. It is attached to the much bigger and newer, Covered Market ("Kapali Carsi")of Kayseri, a real labyrinth, which is the fourth largest covered market in Turkey. Inside the Bedesten you will mostly see carpet and kilim shops, and also some wool warehouses.

A unique feeling, like flying and floating at the same time, defying gravity, a feeling of freedom! You'll have to wake very early in the morning to catch the flight, around 04:30, but I repeat, it's worth the trouble and the money. Camera: Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III Uchisar is one of the most famous villages of Cappadocia, and one of the best places to have as a "base" while exploring this magnificent region, along with Goreme and Urgup. Uchisar means "edge castle" , and its famous for that castle, which is not a castle like we know it with walls and doors etc. It's a very tall volcanic rock, with holes and tunnels, a natural castle that was used like one, since the Byzantine years (there is one more similar village in Cappadocia, called Ortahisar, which I think means "Middle castle"). You can reach the top of the rock crossing tunnels, caves and carved stairs. It is the highest poing in the heart of Cappadocia, offering some magnificent views, especially to Pigeo...

A flight with a balloon above the spectacular landscape of Cappadokia (Turkey) is considered a "must do" once you visit the region, and if you ask me, it really is. The whole thing, waking up in the middle of the night, watch the preparations of the baloon, and mostly, flying (the "main course") are an unforgetable experience. There are many companies arranging flights and if the weather allows it, you can see more than 30 baloons in the Cappadocian sky. The take off place varies and it depends on the wind direction. Some very experienced pilots can fly "through" the rocks, as you can see in the photo. This is part of the path that leads to Selime monastery (Aksaray, Cappadocia, Turkey) , going up a steep hillside, that it's an atraction of its own! Here you see one of the many tunnels with carved stairs leading to the monastic complex. In the background, through the hole, you can see part of the fascade from one of the many rock cut cave-churches of the monastery. The region of Cappadocia is a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

That was the view from my room in a beautiful cave hotel in Ayvali (Nevsehir, Cappadocia, Turkey). Ayvali is a small but beautiful village, very close to famous Sinassos (Mustafapasa) town. The hotel was located inside a small gorge, where a very old Greek-Orthodox Monastery used to be (yes, inside these "cavehouses" that you see in the photo). Cavusin is one of the most beautiful villages of Cappadocia. It is located somewhere between Goreme and Avanos. Here you see part of Old Cavusin, the troglodyte settlement, right above the new village. It was inhabited until the '50s when a earthquake destroyed part of it and the people built their new houses, the new village, below the rock. In Old Cavusin, you can see one of the oldest churches of the region, Saint John the Baptist (5th century). On the edge of the village, close to the Goreme-Avanos road, you can find one more impressive rock-cut church with beautiful frescoes, the Cavusin Kilise, carved in the rock in 964. A collage of beautiful doors from Sinasos town (Nevsehir, Cappadocia, Central Anatolia, Turkey). All of them (except one, the second from left to right, on the second row) belong to old Greek houses. Once upon a time Sinasos, nowadays called Mustafapasa, was sort of unofficial "capital" of the Greek population of Cappadocia. The Orthodox/Greeks that had been living for centuries in that region, where sent to Greece in 1923-24, being part of the exchange of populations between Turkey and Greece, according to the Treaty of Laussane. One of the most beautiful rock cut churches in Cappadocia, a real "trademark" of this magnificent region, this cap shaped rock is known by the strange name "El Nazar". It was a Greek-Orthodox church some centuries ago. It is situated in the El Nazar valley, about 800m to the right from the road to the Goreme Open air museum. The floor has been completely destroyed, as has part of the apse. The frescoes show scenes which follow each other in chronological order. This church can be dated to the end of the 10th century.
