Study of David in the Temple Lawns at Anglesey Abbey

From the series “The color of memory”, oil on paper, 35 x 35 cm. These works come from some thoughts about classical sculpture. We know that the sculptures were originally colorful, and that the Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures, but also the pre-Columbian cultures, favored, to decorate them, very bright colors. But the passage of time has given us these sculptures predominantly white, so, from the Renaissance until today, the sculptural representation of man is almost always monochrome. And it is interesting to think that if by some historical accident, the same thing had happened with painting, today we would paint with one color, and we would find it quite natural, just as the monochrome sculptures seem entirely correct. The Duomo di Siena in Italy is spectacular and don't miss to see it when you are there. Construction on the cathedral began in 1196 and was completed in 1348. Since then it has be used as a Roman Catholic Marian Church and houses many important paintings and sculptures. This image shows a view up into the dome with a painting of a yellow sun and blue sky by Bernini topping the black and white colors of the cathedral. April 2017, iPhone 7Plus

A window on Piazza Navona in central Rome, Italy, with the allegory of the South-American river Rio de la Plata which is part of Bernini's 'Four Rivers Fountain'. (The Rio de la Plata is sitting on a pile of coins, a symbol of the riches America could offer to Europe (the word plata means "silver" in Spanish). Also, the Rio de la Plata looks scared by a snake, showing rich men's fear that their money could be stolen.) (Nikon Coolpix P510)

This marble elephant is the base of one of the 36 Egyptian obelisks in Rome and was sculpted by Bernini in 1667. It stands in front of the Gothic church 'Santa Maria sopra Minerva' near the Pantheon.
