While the snow on the branches is gone the temps are brutal getting below zero at night. One method for birds to stay warm is to fluff their feathers to hold in warm air. We have supplied steady food and water during this crazy, cold winter system and at some points as many as 60-70 of these American Goldfinches have been present. The snow had been falling for a number of days so we had many birds coming to the backyard for food and warm water that we kept heated. This little American Goldfinch left the large groups on the feeders and it appeared it was just ready for a nap! I love watching these playful Wrens. So much so that I decided to be playful with the editing for this one. We have several of these that visit our back yard, sometimes running around the patio, up on the chairs, checking out the grill, the feeders and everything in between. Verdin Snagging Insects From the Agarita by Debra Martz Many songbirds enjoy the fruits of the Agarita plant and/or the insects which the plant attracts as well and we were fortunate enough to have one in our campsite.
