Anticipating the Next Flying Insect by Debra Martz On January 6th the weather was beautiful so decided to take a quick trip over to Port Aransas, TX to see if any birds were around. There were not too many winter migratory birds with the exception of plenty Yellow-rumped Warblers and a few other species. These warblers were quite busy zipping off the branches and out to midair to capture flying insects. Here at Paradise Pond, where it is usually busy with birds, it is not so much now as most of the trees came down with Hurricane Harvery in August 2017. Early Morning Arrival of Egrets by Debra Martz It's that time of year; fall migration of birds passing through northern Oklahoma. Camping at the River Road campground at the Great Salt Plains State Park is a great place to watch the birds as they start moving in early in the morning. Mississippi Kite Juvenile All Alone by Debra Martz This juvenile was all alone and I thought it had been left behind from the flock. Two evenings before a huge flock of these Kites circled overhead for a long period of time and then went to roost at dark. I knew it was about time for them to head out on their migration to South America and the next day was the first that I had not seen nor heard one since arriving in Enid, Oklahoma on August 1st. A couple of afternoons passed and I heard the call, and saw this young one all alone. I was worried for it until later in the evening another flock of Kites did a reapeat of circling like they had two nights priors. Perhaps I am in the migratory flight path of those that are farther nor...

Lark Sparrow Early Morning by Debra Martz While having coffee outdoors at my campsite several mornings in a row, I had begun to notice the habits of the birds as they started their day. The Lark Sparrow (Chondestes grammacus) along with the Black-throated Sparrows would forage mostly from the ground but would also perch on this low snag. Common swallow of Southeast Asia and the Pacific, often in cities and towns as well as above fields, lakes, and forests. Adult iridescent blue above and grayish buff below, with orangish throat and forehead. Similar to Barn Swallow, which has longer outer tail feathers and a dark line separating the throat and breast, lacking in Pacific. Yellow-rumped Warbler at Water Spout by Debra Martz While hiking a few trails at Goose Island State Park in south Texas, I crossed a paved road and noticed a few picnic tables...good time for a break. But the best part was when I neared those tables, I realized there was a watering and feeding station for birds. Shortly after sitting down, in flew this migratory Yellow-rumped Warbler. When I saw this as a larger image on my computer screen I felt it looked like a painting, therefore I added a dry brush painterly effect.

Brightly-colored for a prinia, this is a species of lowland fields, wetlands, and meadows. Dark above, yellowish below, with a white throat, eyering, and thin stripe between eye and bill. Typically found singly or in pairs. Forages low in vegetation, flicking its long tail constantly. Hill Prinia is larger, lacks yellow on the belly, and has a longer and more prominent white supercilium. Song is a distinctive, a cascading series of twitters following a buzzy introductory note. Gnatcatcher On Greenery by Debra Martz The Blue-gray Gnatcatcher is a beautiful, tiny bird that makes itself known by its soft but insistent calls and its constant motion makes it hard to capture. In addition to its constant in and out, up and down movements, it flicks its white-edged tail from side to side, scaring up insects and chasing after them.
