Description: The genetic code describes the information contained in DNA, which is transcribed into RNA messages (or mRNA), then translated when codons (consisting of groups of three nucleotides) are "decoded" into amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Each cell has “machinery” that can read the codons in mRNA, which direct the synthesis of proteins by specifying the order of amino acids used to build each protein. The genetic code has 64 different codons. This code specifies how the different combinations of nucleotides that make up these codons are “decoded” to tell the machinery each amino acid to add as a protein is built.
