Just to the south of Dunfermline's High Street lies one of Scotland's most unusual churches. The Abbey Church of Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland is two very distinct churches, joined in the middle. The effect is unexpected but attractive. The Abbey Church, as the name suggests, was the church serving Dunfermline Abbey. A church probably already existed on this site in 1070, when King Malcolm III married Queen Margaret. Margaret liked Dunfermline so much she set up a Benedictine foundation here. This was later transformed by her son King David I into what was intended to become the most important abbey in Scotland. Work was started in 1128 on the Abbey Church and the nave still survives as the western half of the building on view today.

Dunfermline City Chambers is a building historically designed to be the centre of local government in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. In more recent times most of these functions have been devolved to other locations, but [as of 2008] the impressive edifice still houses the Council Chambers, the Burgh Court and Dunfermline's Registrar Office. The building, constructed in the period 1875-79, was created by James C Walker who also designed the first Carnegie Library. It employs a harmonious composite of French, Gothic and Scots baronial architectural styles and features a prominent four-face clock tower. It was constructed on the site of an older Town House of 1771.

Another view from my office window, looking over the rooftops of Edinburgh, Scotland. In the distance can be seen the River Forth and beyond it the Kingdom of Fife. The city is affectionately nicknamed Auld Reekie (Scots for Old Smoky), because when buildings were heated by coal and wood fires, chimneys would spew thick columns of smoke into the air. Thankfully, most people have central heating now and the chimneys are just an interesting feature which mostly just provide ventilation.

Pittenweem, Fife, Scotland. Pittenweem is now the most active of the fishing ports in the East Neuk coast of Fife. Fishing boats jostle for position in its busy harbour and this is a lively vibrant place at any time of day. To add to the atmosphere, visitors can watch the fish market conducted in the sheds on the harbour from 8.00am each morning. This village is the only one in the East Neuk, still with a working harbour. Although there are fewer boats sailing from here now than in days gone by, it is a unique opportunity to see the daily landings and early morning market. Pittenweem fresh fish is bought here and sold by the many local fish vans who travel all over Scotland selling the fish. BEST VIEWED LARGER

People often compare the small town of Lansing, Illinois, to TV's Mayberry and its cast of lovable characters.

At the east end of the High Street in Pittenweem, Fife, Scotland is the Parish Church, joined in 1588 to the tower of the town's tolbooth now looking very much like the church tower. Parts of the Parish Church date back to the 1300s and originally formed part of the priory church of Pittenweem Priory. This grew out of a community founded by Augustinian monks who came here from the Isle of May in the 1200s. The rest of the priory was eventually incorporated into the fabric of Pittenweem as it developed, and the site of the refectory was used in 1821 for the town hall, since converted to a house. The village name means place of the cave, referring to St Fillan's cave in Cove Wynd, which was used as a chapel by St Fillan from the 600s. BE...

The show was filmed at Camp Pendleton, Desilu Studios's Desilu-Cahuenga, and RKO Forty Acres backlot, where The Andy Griffith Show was filmed. Though Ruben preferred the use of a multiple-camera setup for comedy programs, Gomer Pyle used a single-camera setup because much of the shooting was conducted outdoors. In his book And The Show Goes On, Sheldon Leonard explained that the armed forces offer levels of "cooperation" with filmmakers. Because the Marines felt that the show would be good for the branch's image, Gomer Pyle was given "total cooperation," meaning that the show was allowed unlimited access to military equipment.
