Flapper Tank Tops
Description: The Flapper is an illustration by Frank Xavier Leyendecker, the lesser-known of the two Leyendecker brothers, both of whom were extremely talented illustrators. The image form suggests a young lady maturing into adulthood during the jazz age with her provocative clothing and bright colors providing notional rejection of the conservative mores of behavior and dress that a 'proper' young lady of the time was supposed to adhere to. This particular piece was created as a cover for Life in 1922, but saw a resurgence in popularity as a poster in the '70s.
Description: A glamorous Jazz Age flapper with a sleek black bob and a coral-pink dress strikes a theatrical pose beside an ornate floral screen. Behind her, elegant couples dance while a lively 1920s cocktail party unfolds beneath the words “The Turn in the Road.” Deep teal, antique gold, delicate blossoms and finely inked Art Deco flourishes evoke the decadent sparkle of vintage cabaret, speakeasy nightlife and Roaring Twenties romance.
Description: "El chimpancé enamorado" (The Chimpanzee in Love), created by the famous Spanish cartoonist, animator, and caricaturist Joaquín Xaudaró in Paris in 1912. It was later published in the Spanish magazine Blanco y Negro in January 1913 under the caption "Para quién es esta naranja?" (Who is this orange for?)
