Goring On Thames Lock Tank Tops

The view from the north bank of the River Thames at Goring in Oxfordshire, England, looking across to Streatley village and Streatley Hill, or Lardon Chase in Berkshire. Here the Thames flows between the North Wessex or Berkshire Downs to the south and the Chiltern Hills to the north, this feature being known as the Goring Gap. The lock at Goring on Thames seen from the bridge linking Goring in Oxfordshire with Berkshire at Streatley on Thames. This is one of the most picturesque places on the Thames, situated at the point where the river flows through a gap between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex Downs - known as the Goring Gap. There has been a lock here since the 1500s when a local miller wanted a good head of water to drive the wheel. This was reconstructed as a pound lock in 1787.

This part of the river is known as The Goring Gap as it cuts through between the North Wessex (Berkshire) Downs and the Chiltern Hills. This is a designated Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Here we see the lock keeper's cottage on an island by the lock.

Goring Lock on the River Thames on a sunny October day. There has been a lock here since the 1500s when it was a flash lock, In the 1700s it was redesigned as a pound lock and was constructed of timber, The present lock dates from the 1920s. Goring-on-Thames is a picturesque village in Oxfordshire and is a haunt of artists (and photographers!). Here the river narrows to pass between the North Wessex Downs and the Chiltern Hills at the point known as the Goring Gap.

Here the Thames flows under the bridge on its way towards Pangbourne and Reading - and thence to London and the sea. Through the bridge can be seen the Thames Path, a National trail leading from near Kemble in Gloucestershire to the Thames Barrier in London. A digital sketch from my original photograph.

After heavy rain, the Thames rushing through Day's Weir near Little Wittenham, Oxfordshire. The Thames Path crosses the river over the lock and weir, carrying on upstream towards Abingdon. Apparently the name for Day's Lock and Weir comes from that of a local Catholic yeoman in the 17th century.
