Heroes Three Tank Tops

Description: May 6, 1986. Ten days after the explosion. The basement under Reactor 4 was flooded, radioactive, and completely dark. Three engineers went in anyway. Alexei Ananenko knew where the valves were. Valery Bezpalov went with him. Boris Baranov led the shift. They carried flashlights and a wrench. No cameras. No ceremony. When they found the pipe and opened the valves, their colleagues embraced them in the corridor. That was the recognition. The kind of person who doesn't wait to be called a hero. Who reads a blueprint in the dark. Who understands exactly what's at stake and moves anyway. They were asked once. They said yes. The light stayed on.
