Championship Vinyl is the fictional record store from the 2000 film, High Fidelity, based on the 1995 British novel of the same name, though the setting moved from London to Chicago for the screen. Owned by Rob Gordon, and located in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood, he and his employees are archetypal music snobs, the kind who'd sneer when someone picks up the latest hit record. Throughout the film, the crew leverage their encyclopedic knowledge of music to belittle customers, compile "Top 5" lists for every conceivable occasion, openly mock people's musical tastes, and occasionally manage to sell few records. How Championship Vinyl managed to stay in business is beyond me, but hey, it's a movie, right?

Bill Callahan (born June 3, 1966 is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist who has also recorded and performed under the band name Smog. Callahan began working in the lo-fi genre of underground rock, with home-made tape-albums recorded on four track tape recorders. Later he began releasing albums with the label Drag City, to which he remains signed today.

In the '50s, audio manufacturers employed the phrase high fidelity as a marketing term to describe records and equipment intended to provide faithful sound reproduction. Consumers found the difference in quality compared to the then-standard AM radios and 78-rpm records, and began migrating to high-fidelity phonographs and 33⅓ LPs. Audiophiles focused on technical characteristics and bought individual components, such as separate turntables, radio tuners, preamplifiers, power amplifiers and loudspeakers. Shops specializing in high fidelity sound began popping up, such as St. Paul, Minnesota's Dad’s HiFi. These shops not only stocked the latest equipment, but also sold the components that allowed enthusiasts to build and mod their systems.
