Colorful Modern Musical Design

Chumley's was a historic pub and former speakeasy at 86 Bedford Street, between Grove and Barrow Streets, in the West Village neighborhood of Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York City. It was established in 1922 by the socialist activist Leland Stanford Chumley, who converted a former blacksmith's shop near the corner of Bedford and Barrow Streets into a Prohibition-era drinking establishment. The speakeasy became a favorite spot for influential writers, poets, playwrights, journalists, and activists, including members of the Lost Generation and the Beat Generation movements.

Vintage style Jazz Musician design

The Flapper is an illustration by Frank Xavier Leyendecker, the lesser-known of the two Leyendecker brothers, both of whom were extremely talented illustrators. The image form suggests a young lady maturing into adulthood during the jazz age with her provocative clothing and bright colors providing notional rejection of the conservative mores of behavior and dress that a 'proper' young lady of the time was supposed to adhere to. This particular piece was created as a cover for Life in 1922, but saw a resurgence in popularity as a poster in the '70s.

Most popular during World War II, Leon & Eddie's (said, but not in the club's signage, with an apostrophe S) was beloved by servicemen. Sailors and soldiers, along with civilians, were invited onstage to play "Boomps-A-Daisy" with the chorus girls, butting their hips together for a cheap thrill. In 1939, Time magazine said of the place, "Its ferocious Apache dance is the next thing to murder, but the crowd really goes to hear Proprietor Eddie Davis, whose smutty jokes and songs like Myrtle Isn't Fertile Any More are subtle as a burglar alarm."
