The official show name of the Jack Russell Terrier, the Parson Russel is still known as the Parson Jack Russell in England. It was named after Reverand Jack Russell who cultivated the breed and is the original version of the modern day Fox Terrier. They're an amiable, energetic breed that gets along well with kids and dogs. Those of a certain age are very familiar with this breed... Wishbone from the show Wishbone was a Jack Russell Terrier!

The Tibetan Mastiff is an ancient breed originating over 5,000 years ago in Tibet. They are loyal, sure-footed, and excellent guard dogs. Standing 26 inches at the shoulder and weighing well over 100 pounds, these giants are only made larger by the extreme amount of fluff they grow. Little is known about the Tibetan Mastiff before 1800 in which Captain Samuel Turner mentioned these “huge dogs” in his memoirs. They’ve often been gifts to world leaders such as the Queen of England and President of the Unite States. Despite it’s age, the breed has only recently been recognized by the American Kennel Club, where it was added to the Working Group in 2007.

The Australian Shepherd is not named because it's an Australian dog, but because it herds Australian sheep! This smart, highly trainable, worker was bred in California USA and has quickly grown to become one of the most popular breeds for ranchers, teaching tricks, and keeping as pets.

The Japanese Chin, also known as the Japanese Spaniel, is a long-lived and aristocratic breed. They did not originate in Japan, but were gifts to Japanese royalty from foreign rulers, although there’s argument as to whether it was the rulers of China or Korea who did the original giving. Often called a “feline” dog, these lapdogs were coveted by nobility not just in Japan but all over the world. The Jindo is hailed for its athleticism and loyalty. In 1993, an 83 year-old woman on Jindo island sold her dog to a man who lived 180 miles away and the dog was so devoted it escaped its new owner and ran the full distance to be reunited. This story is beloved among Koreans, being retold in cartoons, books, and even as a memorial statue! The Jindo dog is the 53rd national treasure of South Korea and as a result it's illegal to export Jindos outside of the country. All Jindo dogs existing abroad are either owned by South Korean citizens or mixed breeds.

Nowadays Chihuahuas come in long haired and short haired varieties and many different colors.

Can't Hardly Wait is a 1998 American teen romantic comedy starring an ensemble cast including Ethan Embry, Charlie Korsmo, Lauren Ambrose, Peter Facinelli, Seth Green, and Jennifer Love Hewitt, and is notable for a number of "before-they-were-famous" appearances by teen stars. The story takes place at a high school graduation party in the 1990s.

The Akita is a historic breed from the mountains of Japan. They were used as guard dogs because they are a hardy breed with a thick double-layered coat. They're aloof with strangers, but very affectionate with family and loyal to their house. In 1931 the Akita Inu was declared a national treasure in Japan.

Once called “Overweight Pomeranians” by British dog shows, the British Kennel Club didn’t call them by their official names until 1916! Pronounced “case-hawnd,” the Keeshond is the national dog of the Netherlands. They are a member of the Nordic Siptz family, bred to ride barges in Amsterdam and is nicknamed the Smiling Dutchman. They have a two-layer coat to protect from water with silver and black markings. The dark patches around their eyes tend to look like a pair of spectacles! Keeshonden (the official plural of Keeshond) are very attentive and intelligent, and ready to do anything asked of them.

The Cavalier King Charles spaniel and the King Charles Cavalier spaniel are actually two different spaniels. They began as one, but the Cavalier King Charles has a longer nose in the 20th century when breeders made a join effort to return the breed back to it's origins before interbreeding with pugs to shorten their noses in the 17th century. The King Charles in the name is Charles II of England whose supporters called themselves Cavaliers.

The breed this month is the Old English Sheepdog! Patient, agreeable, and very smart, the old-english sheepdog is equally good at working fields and guarding homes. Sometimes nicknamed Bob-tail, they're known for their bear-like gait and big fluffy rumps. Famous owners include many rich and famous people like industrialists Vanderbilts and Gugenheims, Franklin Deleno Roosevelt (his OES was named Tiny), Sir Paul McCartney, and the family of the For Better or For Worse comic strip. When you can see its eyes, The Old English Sheepdog's are Brown, Blue, or sometimes one of each!

The Brussels Griffon encompasses three breeds: the Griffon Bruxellois, the Griffon Belge, and the Petit Brabancion. They're known for their deep, human-like eyes and short muzzles were visual inspiration for Star Wars's Ewok race!

The name "Collie" can be misleading. In some parts of the world it means Border Collie, but in other parts it means these puppers! This form of Collie comes in Rough and Smooth coated varieties. They originate in Scotland and Northern England where they are used for herding. They were prized by Queen Victoria but you at home probably know them better as "Lassie."
