On the night of April 18, 1775, Paul Revere rode from Boston to Lexington, Massachusetts. He wanted to warn patriot leaders John Hancock and Samuel Adams that British troops were coming to arrest them. Contrary to popular legend, he did not shout "The British are coming", as most colonists still saw themselves as British. Revere warned people that "the regulars" (the British army soldiers) were coming out.
