St Nectan's Waterfall, June 2019 At St Nectan's Glen (near Boscastle, Cornwall, England), the river Trevillet plunges 60 feet down, then through a 'kieve' (a natural borehole in the rock) and into the basin below. Said to be one of the most sacred sites in Britain, St Nectan's Glen is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Nectan (or Nechtan) was one of 24 children of King Brychan of Wales, who decided to become a hermit (probably for a bit of peace and quiet). He and his companions set out from Wales, vowing to settle wherever their boat landed. The wind and tide brought him to the Hartland peninsula of North Devon, some 30 miles north of Boscastle. Sandy Mouth, Cornwall, England Number of views as of 24th September 2017 = 275. Jagged pinnacles of rock on the shore at one of North Cornwall's popular beaches, Sandy Mouth, just a few miles north of Bude. Steps lead down from the National Trust car park to the sand & pebble beach, backed by remarkably folded cliffs. Polperro The fishing village and harbour of Polperro, in South West England, is situated on the southern coast of Cornwall, 25 miles west of Plymouth. The village's quaint harbour and attractive coastline have made it a popular tourist destination and it has long been popular with artists and smugglers. Despite its idyllic appearance, life in Polperro can be tough. Violent storms in 1774,1817 and 1824 swept away houses, parts of the harbour wall and wrecked numerous boats. Date: 11th September 2016. Hawker's Hut Number of views as of 25th April 2017 = 400. Embedded in the side of a cliff, Hawker's Hut (Morwenstow, North Cornwall, England) was built by the somewhat eccentric vicar of Morwenstow, the Reverend Robert Stephen Hawker. Hawker (born 1803) was vicar of Morwenstow from 1834 until his death in 1875. The hut overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and was built from driftwood and timber retrieved from shipwrecks. A scholar and poet, Hawker used the hut as a retreat to write his poetry and to keep an eye on the coastline for ships in distress. During his time at Morwenstow, he made a point of offering shipwrecked mariners washed up on the shores of the parish a decent Christian burial. Fallow Deer, June 2019 One of a herd of over 100 fallow deer on parkland near Padstow (Cornwall, England). The deer in this herd are regularly 'culled', which may seem cruel, but ensures that the herd is managed, remains healthy, and does not become too large (and therefore short of food). Calstock Viaduct, August 2019 Ten miles north of Plymouth, 6 miles south-west of Tavistock, on the Cornwall side of the Tamar River, lies the village of Calstock (Cornwall, England). The village was once an important mining centre. Boats would load up at Calstock and carry their cargoes down the River Tamar. However, the importance of the river as a trading route declined with the building of the Tamar Valley Railway line, whose majestic 120 feet high, 12 arch viaduct (completed in 1907) dominates the village even today. The mining industry eventually declined when the mines were no longer cost-effective to run, and many miners were forced to find work elsewhere.
