It is named after General Creighton Abrams, former Army Chief of Staff and Commander of U.S. military forces in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1972. Highly mobile, designed for modern armored ground warfare, the M1 is well armed and heavily armored. Notable features include the use of a powerful gas turbine engine (multifuel), the adoption of sophisticated composite armor, and separate ammunition storage in a blow-out compartment for crew safety. Weighing nearly 68 short tons (almost 62 metric tons), it is one of the heaviest main battle tanks in service.

I painted this around 2005 during the 2nd Gulf War. It is a M1A1 Abrams tank in a splatter of oil. According to the news article that I got the reference photo from it was being used by British forces in Iraq. 
This image bookends with [“Oil Stain 2”. In a splatter of oil is seen a Kurdish refugee, a woman holding a dead infant. I got the reference photo from a news article about the pullout of US Forces in Iraq at the end of the 1st Gulf War.] The two paintings together can be seen as tank blasting through a wall revealing the other side of war. The collateral damage, the human cost. It reflects my attitude about the war at the time. My respect to all those who sacrificed and payed the price of war and were affected by it.

The M551 Sheridan was an air droppable, amphibious, reconnaissance, tank used by the U.S. Army from 1967 until 1996. It was armed with a 152mm Gun-missile launcher and two machine guns. The M551 saw combat service in Vietnam, Panama, and Kuwait/Iraq. After being retired from frontline service, many were converted into VISMOD vehicles and used as opposing force tanks at the National Training Center, Ft. Irwin, California.

The Claymore mine is a directional anti-personnel mine developed for the United States Armed Forces. Its inventor, Norman MacLeod, named the mine after a large medieval Scottish sword. Unlike a conventional land mine, the Claymore is command-detonated and directional, meaning it is fired by remote-control and shoots a wide pattern of metal balls into the kill zone. The Claymore can also be victim-activated by booby-trapping it with a tripwire firing system for use in area denial operations.
