Quayside Tank Tops

Tobermory, capital of the Isle of Mull in Scotland's Inner Hebrides, depicted here as a digital oil painting in the impressionist style. This colourful and picturesque town is on the east coast of Mishnish, the most northerly part of the island close to the entrane to the SDound of Mull. It began life as a fishing port in 1788 and was apparently based on designs by the noted engineer Thomas Telford. The quayside is busy with fishing boats and is also home to the Tobermory Distillery.

The harbour at Weymouth in Dorset, England. At the mouth of the River Wey, it separates the main town, properly called Melcombe Regis, from Weymouth on the southern side. The two are connected by a bridge - or a rowing boat ferry! Weymouth became popular with tourists after King George III's brother built a grand residence there in the late 1700s and the king himself chose to holiday in the town for 14 successive years. My first venture out with my new camera! The dawn sky was very interesting and the heavy frost on the wooden staithes was very slippery but I was pleased with this effort.

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge (sometimes known as the blinking eye bridge) spans the River Tyne between Gateshead Arts Quarter and the Newcastle Quayside. It is a pedestrian and cycle bridge first opened to the public in 2001 and was the first tilting bridge ever to be constructed.

The quayside at Bosham, West Sussex, lying next to the village green and the church. This image was captured just as the sky was clearing after a dull morning. The village itself has a long history, appearing in the Bayeaux Tapestry where it shows Harold Godwinson and his followers riding towards the church and, even further back when King Canute had a palace nearby. Bosham harbour is part of Chichester Harbour, an important coastal conservation area. This image has a pencil drawing effect.

It's late afternoon at the River Deben quayside at Woodbridge, Suffolk and the low sun is lighting the scene and casting lengthening shadows. Woodbridge sits on the tidal stretch of the Deben just before it flows into the North Sea at Felixtowe. The town was once known for its shipbuilding and rope making - and it is said that some of Sir Francis Drake's warships were built here. Now we find mostly pleasure boats moored here - and a lone gull flying in!

At the quayside in the old port of Stavanger in Norway we find these characterful vintage ships moored. Stavanger is the fourth largest city in the country and has a history stretching back to medieval times. Starting life as a village it grew into a fishing port. It was the discovery of offshore oil and gas that made it grow into the port it is today. The old town and its harbour has old, colourful houses and quayside buildings, This image has been finished as a digital coloured drawing.

A digital sketch of a figure standing on the quayside at Blakeney in North Norfolk watching the sun go down. Blakeney is within the North Norfolk Heritage Coast and is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Until the early C20th it was a commercial seaport, but silting up now makes it only accessible for relatively small boats. Peaceful now - but apparently in medieval times Blakeny had something of a reputation for piracy! Nerarby is Blakeney Point - famous for its seals.

A newly docked fishing boat on the River Blyth in Northumberland on the North East coast of England is attracting seagulls looking for an easy lunch.

The sun is just beginning to peep over Cambois Pier on the River Blyth in Northumberland on the North East coast of England and the colourful sky is casting the tall ship Williams III into silhouette.

I spotted this scene when I was in Weymouth (Dorset, UK) last year - a man making repairs to some fishing gear, beside his boat, at the quayside. Having found a nice way to frame the scene I've now painted this in oil on a 12x12 inch board - one of hopefully a series of people working in interesting jobs.

Exeter quayside is a popular tourist attraction in the heart of Exeter in Devon, England. Surrounded by lively hostelries & cafes it makes for a pleasant visit.

The Millenium Bridge, Newcastle, the bridge links Newcastle’s thriving north bank with the Gateshead Quays arts and cultural quarter. The bridge is essentially two graceful curves, one forming the deck and the other supporting it, spanning between two islands running parallel to the quaysides.

The scene at Maryport on the north coast of Cumbria early in the morning on a day in late June. The sun has just broken through the cloud cover to light up the harbour buildings. Maryport was once a hive of activity with coal being shipped out for the growing steel industry. However, in the early tears of the 20th century it fell into decline. Gateshead Millennium Bridge - the world's first and only tilting bridge! Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects and engineered by Gifford, the bridge takes its place at the end of a line of distinguished bridges across the River Tyne, including the Tyne Bridge and Robert Stephenson's High Level Bridge. Linking Gateshead with Newcastle via Gateshead Quays (described as one of the best places in Europe by Tony Blair) and Newcastle's Quayside, the bridge not only serves a functional purpose as the River Tyne's only foot and cycle bridge, but its grace and engineering attract people from all over the world.
