Popularly known as "The Show Me State", Missouri actually has no official state nickname. There are many stories as to where the phrase came from, but the one circulated the most comes from a speech by Congressman Willard Vandiver in 1899, who said, "I come from a state that raises corn and cotton, cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I'm from Missouri, and you have got to show me." This is in keeping with the saying "I'm from Missouri" which means "I'm skeptical of the matter and not easily convinced." I'm a Missourian through and through. A skeptic about everything from UFOs to Bigfoot to the Paranormal. If you want me to believe in something, you're going to have to show me, first hand with my own eyes.
