Grits are without question a truly southern dish, so it would make sense that a town in the south would host a multi day festival celebrating them. After it came to the attention of several buyers for local grocery stores and grits distributors that the people of St. George, South Carolina ate more grits per capita than any other place in the world, the wheels were in motion to celebrate. The first festival was held in 1986, when the small southern town of just 2,000, welcomed an estimated 45,000 aficionados of grits to enjoy their favorite dish and engage in grits related activities.
