Ullswater, The Lake District

This little abstract was inspired by Ullswater one of the most popular stretches of water in UK Lake District. When I do these sketches I always aim to convey a sense of place rather than a photographic representation. However, I do know exactly which pub I was standing outside when I took the photo for this piece.

The boathouse is one of the most iconic and most photographed buildings in the Lake District. It originally belonged to the 3rd Duke of Portland in the 18th century, who was Prime Minister twice and was in constant dispute with the Earl of Lowther. Unfortunately, the Duke of Portland had to sell the boathouse along with his Cumberland estates to pay his legal bills.

Swan Lake (Ullswater)

A path through the Autumn tree colours and fallen leaves on the banks of Ullswater in the Lake District. My favourite time of year!

This lovely lake is surrounded by stunning mountain scenery to its south, softening to the gentle hills of the north. The lake is the second largest in England at seven and a half miles long, but is less than a mile across. It is also the third deepest English lake at 250 feet deep.
