Bringing football to the world. The World Football League (WFL) was a short-lived American football league that played in 1974 and part of 1975. Although the league's proclaimed ambition was to bring American football onto a worldwide stage, the farthest the WFL reached was placing a team – the Hawaiians – in Honolulu, Hawaii. The league folded midway through its second season, in 1975.

Defunct Salt City Aces Football Team

The Shreveport Steamer were a professional American football team in the World Football League. The franchise began the 1974 season in Houston, Texas, as the Houston Texans (no connection to the current NFL team of the same name), playing their home games at the Houston Astrodome. Toward the end of the season, the team relocated to Shreveport, Louisiana, and became the Shreveport Steamer. They played at the 30,000-seat State Fair Stadium, now named Independence Stadium. Larry King, of future CNN fame, was one of their broadcasters.

The Chicago Winds was the World Football League's ill-fated 1975 successor to the Chicago Fire. The team was so named because Chicago was nicknamed "The Windy City." The Winds played at Soldier Field and the team was assigned to the WFL's Western Division for 1975.

Although the league's proclaimed ambition was to bring American football onto a worldwide stage, the farthest the WFL reached was placing a team – the Hawaiians – in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Austin Texans were a minor league professional football team that played in the AFA from 1977 to 1981. The American Football Association (AFA) was a professional American football minor league that operated from 1977 to 1983. The AFA was concentrated in the southern United States and served as the second tier of professional football. The league played its games on Saturday nights in the summer (beginning its season Memorial Day weekend and ending in August) to avoid direct competition against other football in the fall. The AFA ended operations in 1983.

In 1977 members of the San Antonia Amateur Football League began work on creating a new minor league football league, they called it the American Football Association. One of the earlier amateur teams, the San Antonio Charros became one of the new league's first teams. The Charros joined five other clubs from Austin, Fort Worth, Houston, Oklahoma City, and Wichita Falls to establish the American Football Association. The team played five summer seasons with a mix of teams coming and going. The Charros won the first championship and played as the Charros until they changed names and became the San Antonio Bulls for the last two seasons.

Defunct Georgia Force Football Team

The WFL team eventually known as the Charlotte Hornets was, for a time, located in Boston and called the Bulls, shortened from the Bulldogs. Because no suitable field was available in Boston, the team merged with the New York team and became the New York Stars before the 1974 season. By the end of that season the team had moved to Charlotte.

The Memphis Southmen, also known as the Memphis Grizzlies, was an American football team based in Memphis, Tennessee. From the beginning, Memphians disliked "Southmen" and the team was informally known as the Memphis Grizzlies. The name appeared to come from the logo, a representation of a bear backed by the sun. Elvis supported this team. They played in the World Football League (WFL), which operated in 1974 and 1975. They played their home games at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

The AFA was concentrated in the southern United States and served as the second tier of professional football between the World Football League, which folded in 1975, and the United States Football League, which began play in 1983. Unlike the WFL or USFL, the AFA always fashioned itself as a minor league, and never planned to rival the National Football League for "major league" status. The team folded after only one season. The Americans were replaced as the Birmingham WFL franchise for the 1975 season by a new team called the Birmingham Vulcans.

The 1981 Chicago Fire were a pro football outfit that competed in the summer-season American Football Association. The club was a brand re-boot of the old Chicago Fire of the World Football League, resuscitating that team’s name, logo and helmet design.
