Aircraft Warning Service, the civilian arm of the Army’s Ground Observer Corps. On the east coast, the AWS was under the auspices of the Army Air Force’s 1st Interceptor Command (later First Fighter Command or I Fighter Command) based in Mitchell Field, NY. On the west coast, the AWS was under the auspicies of the 4th Interceptor Command (Later Fourth Fighter Command or IV Fighter Command) based in Riverside, California.

Long live the AAF

The 64th Bombardment Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force unit. It was last assigned to the 43d Bombardment Wing at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, where it was inactivated on 31 January 1970. Between May and September 1943, the squadron's B-17s were replaced with Consolidated B-24 Liberators, believed to be more suited to the long ranges of many Pacific missions. In November 1944 the squadron moved to the Philippines, helping the ground campaign on Luzon as well as conducting long range strategic bombing missions against targets in China and Formosa.

The 827th Bombardment Squadron is a former United States Army Air Forces unit. It was last assigned to the 484th Bombardment Group at Casablanca Airport, French Morocco, where it was inactivated on 25 July 1945. The squadron was first activated as the 41st Bombardment Squadron as the United States expanded its military following the outbreak of World War II. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the squadron performed antisubmarine warfare missions off the Atlantic coast of the United States, and was redesignated as the 5th Antisubmarine Squadron.

The 873rd Tactical Missile Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force unit. Its last assignment was with the 498th Tactical Missile Group at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa. The squadron was first activated in 1943 for service during World War II as the 873rd Bombardment Squadron. After training in the United States with Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers, the squadron moved to the Mariana Islands, where it participated in the strategic bombing campaign against Japan, earning two Distinguished Unit Citations before the end of hostilities in August 1945. The squadron returned to the United States in December 1945 and was inactivated in March 1946, and its personnel and equipment were transferred to another organization.

Boeing B-29 'Enola Gay'. 1984 illustration of the Boeing B-20 'Enola Gay' dropping the 'Little Boy' bomb. This aircraft, piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets, dropped the 'Little Boy' bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima at 8.16am local time, on 6th August 1945. Detonating 565 metres above the city centre, the bomb had an explosive energy equivalent to 12.5 kilotons (12,500 tons) of TNT. It is estimated that over 155,000 people died in Hiroshima; this figure includes radiation- related deaths within the first year. This bomb, and a second dropped on the city of Nagasaki, resulted in the end of World War Two.

Long live the AAF

Spence Air Base was a United States Air Force base that operated from 1941 to 1961 amed Spence Army Airfield after World War I hero Lt. Thomas Lewis Spence of Thomasville, Georgia who died in a 1918 aircraft crash in France. When the attack on Pearl Harbor came on 7 December 1941 a small military detachment of 27 officers and 39 enlisted men staffed the airfield. It was used by the Army Air Forces Flying Training Command, Southeast Training Center (later Eastern Flying Training Command) for advanced single-engine flying training. The Army Air Forces Pilot School (Advanced Single-Engine) activated on 15 November 1941. The North American AT-6 Texan was the primary aircraft operated by the school.

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was one of the most feared combat airplanes during World War II (WW2). Many squadrons had their own insignias. This was the design for the 49th Fighter Squadron.
